4 Inspiring Veggie Gardens in Australia

One of the ways I get ideas for what to grow in my garden and how I came to figure out what veggies to plant when in Australia, was by checking out what other people with awesome veggie patches are doing via Instagram.

I learned a whole lot throughout my gardening journey by trial and error, but seeing into other people’s backyards and the cool things they are doing is one of the quickest ways to up level.

I follow so many accounts of people doing interesting things in their garden, but here are 4 really epic Australian-based backyard garden gurus to stick with through the seasons. And if you’re wondering what veggies to grow now in Australia and don’t have time to trawl through Instagram, you are welcome to download my free 2023 Planting Calendar below!

#1 Garden With Connie, Melbourne

Based in Melbourne, Garden With Connie is the Instagram account of Connie Cao who shares about how she and her husband transformed their suburban backyard into an epic veg and flower garden complete with garden beds and green houses. Connie grows lots of different produce each season, but the photos of her summer haul of different coloured tomatoes and zucchini are amazing. The good news is, Connie has also written 2 e-books explaining what she does in her garden. I’ve bought them both and loved them!

#2 Sam and Wild Violet Farm, Lilydale, Victoria

One of the most inspiring backyard vegetable patches in Australia has to belong to Sam Webb from the Sam And Wild Violet Garden Instagram account. Sam grows a huge amount of flowers, beautiful vegetables, berries and has chickens roaming around her garden in Lilydale, Victoria.

Her photography of all her beautiful different types of berries from strasberries, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries is so mouthwatering that I’ve bought a number of varieties from her website for my backyard. She now has expanded from her backyard to her own flower farm where locals can buy her beautiful blooms #lucky!

#3 Happy Garden, Happy Life, Victoria

The beauty of homegrown onions from Happy Garden, Happy Life

I came across Rav from the Happy Garden, Happy Life Instagram on ABC’s Gardening Australia show where he was sharing how he had turned his backyard in suburban Melbourne into a vegetable producing Mecca. He grows a lot of great cooking staples like beans, tomatoes, potatoes and carrots. I’m not hugely into onions, but his are just so beautiful! What I love about Rav’s Instagram is that he shares a lot of tips, like how to store those onions above for months so you can eat them all year and he has a very simple raised bed set up that anyone could take inspiration from.

#4 The Calile Hotel Rooftop, Brisbane

Wondering what veggies to plant now in Australia? I get inspired by these Instagram accounts including the Calile Rooftop Garden Image credit: Future Wild Instagram

Despite living in Brisbane, I seemed to have been profiling a lot of Victorian-based veggie gardens! The rooftop at the chic Calile Hotel is another amazing vegetable garden I follow and is thankfully in Brisbane! Set up and run by Ellia Guy from the Future Wild Instagram account, I love how it shows that a thriving veggie patch can be set up anywhere. They’ve recently harvested so many beautiful grapes and you can go downstairs to the Lobby Bar at the hotel and order food that includes produce from above. A great reason for a Brisbane visit or staycation!
