Growing Zinnias In Pots

This was my first go at growing zinnias in pots and it worked out!

This spring I grew a big garden bed full of zinnias at my new community garden plot, but I didn't to miss out on having pretty flowers at my home so I also decided to have a go at growing zinnias in pots on my balcony.

I’ve grown zinnias in multiple gardens over the years, but I’ve haven’t had a chance to grow them in pots and I was curious about how they would go. I decided to keep it simple and plant enough pots to go on one waterproof table on my balcony (8 in total) and they turned out great! The main key to the success I think was planting only one zinnia per pot so they had ample room to grow.

Zinnias also like and need a lot of direct sunlight so I positioned them out in the full sun on my balcony. I’m really happy with how they turned out. Check out the materials and simple steps I took below. And If you’re looking for other flowers to grow in Brisbane, check out my Seasonal Planting Calendar below too!

Some of the steps I took to grow these zinnias in pots - I planted one seedling only per pot to give them space to grow and set them up in direct sunlight on my balcony.

If you don’t have a garden bed but still want to grow your own flowers, growing in pots is an inexpensive options. Here’s a few of the materials I used for this experiment:

  • 8 black pots approx. 20 cm tall

  • 1 packet of zinnia seeds

  • 1-2 bags of potting mix to fill the pots

  • waterproof plastic table (optional) for planting
