Growing Silverbeet in Brisbane
I usually wait all year to get to autumn (not a huge wait!) because it’s my favourite time to grow vegetables in Brisbane and the top of my list is silverbeet. I think it’s one of the most versatile, healthy and easy to grow veggies to have on hand. It can go in salads, be sauteed and put in a great weekend breakfast, or cooked in a delicious spanakopita. What’s not to love.
This year I decided to try growing it in planter boxes on my balcony so that I could pick it whenever I wanted. It worked out super well even though I actually planted it a number of months late. Check out the details of what I did to grow silverbeet in Brisbane below and you may also like my free Seasonal Planting Calendar below too!

Growing Silverbeet in Brisbane | 3 Tips
#1 If you don’t have a garden bed but still want to grow your own veggies, growing in planter boxes/raised beds is an inexpensive option. I grew silverbeet in two of the containers and had so many leafy greens it was unbelievable!
#2 I grew all of the silverbeet from my own seedlings (many of the seeds can from Eden Seeds which is a seed company I use a lot) and I planted about 8-10 seedlings in each of the planter boxes which seemed like the perfect amount when they were fully grown.
#3 I’m obsessed with colour in the garden and along with traditional silverbeet, I also grew Ruby Red Chard and Rainbow Chard (these are just different silverbeet varieties) which both have stunning red and yellow stems.
