Out one night for drinks, I heard my pal Speedy tell another pal Zoe that when it comes to gardening she “kills everything she grows”. Having seen Speedy’s exceptional first go at a home garden myself, I knew that was 100% incorrect! I pulled out photos to show Zoe and next minute Zoe declared she wanted to have a go at growing flowers too. It was the start of our highly competitive Facebook group, Green Thumbs!

Zoe was a dark horse of the growing game, coming out of nowhere to grow 10 pots of incredible bright pink zinnias. So I checked in with her to see what she did to get such a good result.

One thing I will say is that I never heard Zoe say anything negative or self deprecating about her garden. She always believed they would grow and they did!

Planted Seeds Before? No

What Did She Grow? Zinnias and The Bee-Friendly Pack

Zoe’s Tip #1 — put them in the right spot. The seedlings don't do well in direct sun all day so to vary the position of the pots to give them an opportunity to grow and not get burnt.

Zoe’s Tip #2 — be consistent. In Brisbane over the summer time there are some pretty hot days so its really important to be consistent with the watering in the morning and afternoon especially as a seedling.

Zoe’s Tip #3 — work with the hand you’re dealt. Not all the seedlings grow from seed stage despite best efforts and lots and lots of water. You just have to hope for the best and accept what grows.
