If you’re looking for an expert hand on how to grow veggies in Australia or would love tips on how to set up the perfect garden bed, there are a range of vegetable growing workshops emerging in Australia to help.

For those who love to mingle in a group setting and make farmer friends, there are fantastic part day and whole day workshops to sink your teeth into. And for the introverts among us (me) or those who prefer to learn on their own schedule, there are also some great online tutorials making growing veggies that much more possible, even for the newbies among us.

Here are four great vegetable growing courses in Australia to get that vegetable patch growing ASAP!

#1 Good Life Permaculture | 2 Week Permaculture Design Course | Tasmania

If you are the sort of person who likes to go big or go home with all that you do, the Good Life 2 Week Residential Permaculture Design Course might be the big move to do. It’s run by Gardening Australia’s Hannah Moloney in Hobart and goes through all of the different aspects of growing vegetable but within a permaculture context which includes looking at the entire land you live on and how all the living things (people, animals, insects etc) are part of the ecosystem. I did a 2-day Permaculture with Hannah many years ago and was really impressed. This one runs from Jan 21, 2024, with the price and full details still TBC. One to watch if you are serious about growing veggies and love to learn in person!

#2 Milkwood Permaculture | Organic Vegetable Gardening Online Course

Thanks to Instagram spamming me with veggie growing courses, I came across Milkwood Permaculture’s new course offering and I’m glad I did because it looks great! Their new Organic Vegetable Gardening Course is an online offering that runs across 8 weeks and covers creating a vision and design for your garden and how to save money by growing your own seedlings. The course starts on May 15, 2023 and the cost is $439. You can also upgrade to their fast-forward option for $1249 where you get 4 x calls with the owners Nick and Kirsten to help you along the way.

#3 Westbourne Farm | 1 on 1 Permaculture Training | Brisbane

If you like bespoke offerings and who doesn’t, another great option for learning how to grow veggies is to get 1 on 1 training from a permaculture expert who can come out to your home and see what you’re dealing with. I’ve had the pleasure of getting some garden, permaculture and composting help from Lucy Hurrey from Westbourne Farm and it was fantastic. A typical suburban project costs $550 and the only downside is that those who want this higher level of one to one attention will need to be in and around Brisbane to get Lucy’s expertise. Contact Westbourne Farm directly to set up a consult.

#4 Salisbury Grange | Monthly Garden Tours

I go through how to grow veggie seedlings direct from my own home

And how to set up simple gardens for any home situation, even when you don’t have much land

Salisbury Grange is me! On my Patreon page I share a video each month about how I go about growing veggies at home in Brisbane. I started growing veggies as a total newbie 10 years ago and although I now grow tonnes of fresh organic veggies each season with ease, it took me a number of years to get the hang of it. I explain everything that I know how to do there, so check it out!
