5 Best Veggies For Raised Bed Gardening

The new raised bed garden set up on my Mum’s high-rise balcony in Brisbane

I’ve only been growing in raised bed gardens for the last year, and they have absolutely won me over, but there is no doubt about it - you need to be strategic with what you’ve got.

The best thing about raised garden beds is that they’re small and mobile so that you can move them and use them in small spaces like balconies and in high rise buildings. But that is also the worst thing about them - they’re small! And because of that you can’t grow any old thing you want, but have to focus on veggies that suit the raised bed confines. This unfortunately means that big and heavy beauties like purple cabbages and large broccoli plants are best left out.

After recently helping my Mum set up a new raised bed garden on her balcony in a high rise apartment in inner-city Brisbane, I’ve come up with 5 of the best veggies to suit raised bed gardens like the ones above. And if you’re wondering what the best time of year to plant them is, check out my Seasonal Planting Calendar below.

5 Best Veggies For Raised Bed Gardening | Australian Edition

The best veggies to plant when working with raised bed gardens are small veggies you eat the most of on a daily basis. For me that is: #1 Lettuce - it’s fast growing and you can fit up to 8 lettuce seedlings within one planter.
#2 Rocket - it grows fast, doesn't take up too much space and can be used in so many meals.
#3 Spinach - is a little bigger but grows all throughout autumn. 6 will fit in a planter.
#4 Parsley - is a useful herb that doesn't take up too much space and makes every meal taste better.
#5 Basil - also grows quickly in most scenarios, is a great herb and also attracts in pollinators like bees.
