The Names Of 10 Pretty Flowers (And When To Grow Them!)

One pretty flower worth knowing the name of = stunning green Bells of Ireland!

We all know flower basics like sunflowers and marigolds, but there is a whole world of wild and wonderful flowers just waiting to be appreciated out there! Over the years I’ve experimented with a few different flowers each season to widen my repertoire and boy, I’m glad I did.

If you are looking to find out the names of pretty flowers, you’ve come to the right place. I’ve taken photos of some of the lesser known flower varieties I’ve grown over the last few years to help. From bright green Bells of Ireland to scented sweet peas to sculptural amaranth, here are the names of 10 pretty flowers (in alphabetical order) that grow really well in Australia!

#1 Amaranth is a weird and wonderful flower that grows over summer into autumn. I love the green and gold contrast.

#2 Billy Buttons are a yellow ball of fun and also an Australian native to boot. They grow best in spring.

#3 Celosia is a gorgeous frond/plume that grow very easily over spring.

#4 Chamomile is not only the name of a tea but of a really pretty flower. They're the cute yellow and white ones here. Plant them in autumn or spring.

#5 Dahlia is the name of a pretty flower that people are becoming much more familiar with, due to beauties like the Cafe Au Lait variety pictured here on the left. They are a summer flower that likes the heat.

#6 Echinacea is the most amazing flower I've ever grown! I planted these purple beauties in summer and they bloomed just before autumn hit.

#7 Scabiosa is definitely a flower name that is under the radar. I loved the deep purple 'Black Cat' variety I grew over summer.

#8 Strawflowers come in a range of colours, but I adored this classic paper white variety. I planted them in autumn and early spring in Brisbane.

#9 Sweet Peas are synonymous with stunning scent and with St Patrick's Day - the date you're meant to plant them in autumn!

#10 Zinnia is the name of a pretty round flower that has many rows of petals. They come in lots of vibrant colours and butterflies love them too.
