6 Great Cut Flowers To Grow In Australia

Looking for great cut flowers to grow in Australia? Dahlias are a winner including this African Peach variety

To be honest, I’m here for growing flowers outside, but also for bringing them inside. There’s nothing that brightens my day more than seeing some fresh flowers on a kitchen table, in a little vase next to a bed or in a huge centrepiece at a dinner party (if you have the skills!)

While all flowers are beautiful, not all blooms make great cut flowers, so I’ve put together a list of 6 flower varieties that make great bunches and can last the distance inside — including unusual options such as the sculptural green Bells of Ireland and fragrant Spring Onion Flowers. Happy flower growing!

Wanting to grow cut flowers in Australia that can be displayed beautifully inside? I recommend the sunflower, spring onion flowers, celosia and chamomile beauties pictured (above) here.

6 Great Cut Flowers To Grow In Australia | 2023 Edition

#1 Dahlias - with their intricate layers of petals are a stunning cut flower to grow in Australia each summer. I love seeing a tonal palette of dahlias like the white bunch below!
#2 Sunflowers - are super easy to grow and super easy to arrange in a bunch and grow across all seasons. Winner!
#3 Spring Onion Flowers - are the flowers that grow on Spring Onions once they go to seed at the end of a growing season. While unusual, they are fragrant and interesting and make a stellar cut flower. Grow them across autumn, winter and spring in Brisbane.
#4 Celosia - is a spring bloom that makes a great cut flower. The bright yellow cockscomb variety (which you can see above) piques a lot of interest!
#5 Chamomile - is not only a type of tea, but a beautiful flower variety that makes a great bunch. The tiny white and yellow blooms grow well over autumn and spring.
#6 Bells Of Ireland - are the bright green sculptural blooms you can see below. Not only do they make a statement as a cut flower bunch, they also smell like mint. Divine!

Bright green Bells Of Ireland makes a statement in a vase!

A bunch of dahlias is always welcome - this blush variety is called Astrid Coorabell.
