5 Reasons You Keep Killing Your Plants!

When I think back to when I first started growing vegetables and flowers, I cringe at the mistakes I made. The worst one being I almost ruined my grandparents famous soil which still haunts me to this day.

But, I improved and learned a lot over the years and since I’ve also been working 1 x 1 with a lot of gardening clients, friends and family this year, I can clearly see the few places people seem to go wrong.

So let me help you. Here’s 5 reasons why you might be killing your plants and the very simple ways to fix it.

#1 You’re not watering: you need to water every day, especially in summer, your plants will die without it.
#2 You’re impatient and give up: it takes 3 months to get from seed to a fully-grown plant, and nothing can change that! I used to think it took about 1 week, but stick with the process and you will get there!
#3 It’s the wrong season: it takes experience to work out what grows in which season, so if you’ve planted something in the wrong season, like heat-loving dahlias during winter, that’s the reason they’re not growing.
#4 Not enough space: I’ve seen so may people plant big seedlings into the tiniest spots and wonder why they’re anaemic. They’re suffocating! As a standard, I put one plant into one 20cm high pot or plant seedlings 30cm apart in a garden bed so roots have space to spread out and thrive.
#5 Wrong spot: if you’ve got your plants in a place that is too hot or too shady, they’re not going to thrive. I hedge my bets and put my seedlings in a spot that gets morning sunlight and afternoon shade.
