Easy Raised Garden Bed Ideas For Brisbane

Some of my homegrown seedlings that I’m planting into my raised garden beds in Brisbane

If you are thinking about buying some raised garden beds to start growing veggies or flowers in Brisbane, but not sure about it, I hear you. I was a little reticent at first because I wasn’t sure if I would get good use out of them or if it would be worth the return on investment.

Well I was completely wrong because I have been using them non stop and have had to create a seasonal plan so that I make sure I get to everything I want to grow in my raised garden beds. I started off with 3 and now have 10 and even then it doesn't seem like enough for all of my plans.

If you are looking for a few raised garden beds ideas to try in Brisbane, let me share some of the seasonal ideas I’ve used my for including creating a ‘salad bowl’ filled with leafy greens and herbs in summer to a pollinator patch with lots of flowers in spring!

Raised garden beds have been a game changer as I don’t have a traditional backyard garden bed anymore (above) but still want to grow veggies and attract pollinators

Raised Garden Bed Ideas For Brisbane | By The Seasons

#1 Summer Salad Bowl: Raised garden beds are perfect for leafy greens so why not plant a range of rocket, lettuce, basil and parsley in summer. I planted one raised garden bed with 3 basil seedlings + 3 parsley, and another raised bed with 4 lettuce + 4 rocket to have an abundance of salad greens. Check out my other raised garden bed tips here.

#2 Autumn Carrots: I plant 6 carrots per raised garden bed each autumn (I did a total of 12 this year across 2 raised beds) and the most important part is to fill it right to the very top with soil so that the carrots have space to grow underground. I’ve found that homegrown carrots are so much more delicious than supermarket varieties.

#3 Spring Bee Flowers: Invite bees and butterflies into the garden in spring with a range of bee flowers in raised garden beds. I recommend planting out 3 raised beds with flowers that like Brisbane heat: 1 with 3 x pink Zinnia, 1 with 3 x white Cosmos and 1 with 3 x orange Marigolds. While the flower seedlings can start of small they grow quite large so a small raised garden bed can only fit 2-3 fully grown flowers.

#4 Summer Dahlias: I’m trying growing beautiful summer dahlias in my raised garden beds to see if they will grow this year. As dahlias can get quite large I will plant a maximum of 1-2 dahlia tubers in each bed over summer and hope for spectacular blooms 3 months later.

I’ve used both round and rectangular raised garden beds in Brisbane and both were great!

My 10 raised garden beds: they should be overflowing with leafy greens in a month!
