5 Flowers To Grow In Brisbane (That Like Our Weather)

One of my all time favourite flowers to grow in Brisbane each autumn: bright green Bells Of Ireland

I started gardening in my Brisbane backyard because I wanted to eat organic vegetables like rocket and lettuce. But when I learned that you grow flowers in the exact same way, more than half of my garden real estate was immediately dedicated to flowers.

I’ve experimented with a range of different varieties over the years, but have narrowed this list down my all time favourite flowers to grow in Brisbane that both work with our very particular climate and that are cool varieties you can’t really get anywhere else.

From bright green bells of Ireland to feathery yellow celosia, these awesome flowers are sooo much more exciting than the gerberas and sad non-fragrant roses in the supermarket. Happy growing!

5 Flowers To Grow In Brisbane | Season Guide

#1 Zinnia in super bright oranges and pinks are a perfect flower to grow in Brisbane’s summer because they can manage hot weather. Butterflies also really love them. Eden Seeds sells some cool ones here.

#2 Celosia is not a well known flower, but it’s so interesting, bright and very hardy which makes it a good match for Brisbane’s spring weather. This feathery variety is called cockscomb and I had so many people comment on it.

#3 Sweet Peas are a nostalgic favourite and have the most divine fragrance. Because they need cool weather to thrive, they work well for Brisbane in autumn. Lambley Nursery has lots of cool varieties including the bright purple Leamington (above).

#4 Sunflowers are always a garden winner and one of the easiest flowers to grow in Brisbane. I recommend planting them in winter and giving them lots of sun. I love planting mammoth sunflowers!

#5 Chamomile are an often overlooked flower that have the daintiest daisy-like yellow centres. Chamomile is a great flower to plant in Brisbane’s autumn, and of course, you can also make your own tea! Eden Seeds sells organic chamomile seed.
