The 4 Dinnerplate Dahlias I’m Planting In 2023

The Samoan Prince Dahlia from Wild Violet Flower Farm

Even though we are currently in Dahlia season (January!) I am already thinking about the dahlias I want to grow later this year when September rolls around again.

This year I have my eye on four of the hugest, most incredible dinnerplate dahlias (AKA ones that have flowers the size of dinner plates) and I’m already plotting how to get them. If you’ve ever tried to get your hands on a sought after variety you’ll know it’s a war out there with dahlia tubers selling out within minutes! IYKYK.

I go through the 4 dahlias I really want to grow in 2023 below. I also put together a little cheatsheet for myself of the Australian dahlia tuber sellers who stock these stunning varieties and many more so my research is done in advance. If you’d like a copy, you can download it below. Happy dahlia hunting!

Dahlias I’m Growing In 2023 | Dinnerplate Edition

#1 Samoan Prince: this enormous flower has specks of pink and white and often throws out a section with bright red. I love how unusual it is!

#2 Holland Festival: I’ve only seen this dahlia emerge in the last couple of years and I want the gigantic fluffy peaches and cream petals for myself.

#3 Cafe Au Lait: everyone’s classic dinner plate favourite, I let my cafe au lait stock go a couple of years ago and I want them back, they are just so showstopping.

#4 Carlos Watermelon: I tried so hard to get my hands on the ginormous bright watermelon coloured dahlia last year and they sold out in seconds, even at $25 each! The bold colour is just so fun.
