The Best Flowers To Grow In Brisbane, Month By Month
Wondering what are the best flowers to grow in Brisbane? I love dahlias in hot weather and sunflowers in cooler months
Zinnia, celosia, dahlia, Bells of Ireland….these were all names of flowers I’d never even heard of 10 years ago, let alone thought I could possibly grow myself one day from seed.
Fast forward a number of years and plenty of experimenting and I have grown heaps of beautiful flowers in my backyard in Brisbane (and in pots as well). One year I even set myself the challenge of growing my own flowers for all big occasions including Mother’s Day, Christmas, birthdays and baby showers (not easy!).
There are so many flowers, so little time, but I have put together a list of what I consider to be the best flowers to grow in Brisbane. In a nutshell, any flower that likes hot weather is a good flower to grow in Brisbane. Sadly, stunning flowers like tulips, peonies and lilacs that thrive in colder climates aren’t on this list, but you can’t have everything. Here are 12 of the best flowers to grow in Brisbane, and when to plant them, below!
January is a great time to plant orange marigolds - they can handle Brisbane’s heat.
February is a good time to plant brightly coloured zinnia in Brisbane and the butterflies love them too.
As the weather cools down in March, you can plant sweet peas. The traditional date to plant them is St Patrick’s Day on March 17.
April is a good time to plant beautiful Bells of Ireland as they are happiest when it’s a little cooler.
May is a great time to plant dainty little chamomile which make great flowers as well as tea.
June is cold in Brisbane but if you still have a lot of sun shining in your garden, sunflowers are a good choice.
July is a good time to plant calendula, the bright yellow flower at the front of this bunch.
A wild card flower to grow in August are spring onion flowers. They are on my right here and a very chic, unusual bloom in my opinion!
These gorgeous yellow celosia are great to plant in September as the weather warms up. This variety is called cockscomb.
October has warmer weather again and cosmos are a great flower for this time as they are happy in the heat.
November is a great time to plant echinacea. These can take 3-4 months to grow but are so worth it. I love them!
