7 Best Veggies To Grow In Brisbane This Spring/Summer

My spring backyard harvest

I used to think that summer was the time to shut up shop for veggies and just focus on growing pretty flowers for bees while we waited for the boiling Brisbane heat to run its course. Why? It just seemed too hot and too much bother.

But I set myself the goal of growing most of my own food for myself this year, so I really had to rethink my spring/summer vegetable garden to work out how I could get there. And I’m really glad I did because some of the most delicious, sun-drenched vegetables are summer vegetables (think of a ratatouille with fresh ripe tomato, capsicum, eggplant and basil). I’ve included my top 7 spring and summer veggies below and my tips for keeping them alive in warm Brisbane weather.

7 Best Veggies To Grow In Brisbane | Spring & Summer

The best veggies to grow in Brisbane in spring and summer are:

  • Rocket, Basil, Capsicum, Cucumber, Zucchini, Corn, and Pumpkin.

But knowing what to plant is only one part of the equation — you also need to keep them alive!

My tips are to plant seeds when it’s warm not hot (e.g. in September/October - not December), to plant seedlings in a spot that get morning sun, but afternoon shade (for example, in the shade of a big tree or at the side of a house rather than in an open backyard) and to water produce morning and night to keep them hydrated. I’ve had great success with the 7 delicious vegetables above in many high temperatures. Good luck!
